Latvijas zinatnu akademija (LZA) – Latvia
The Latvian Academy of Sciences (Latvijas Zinatnu akademija – LZA) is the institution under the authority of the Ministry of Education and Science (MoES). The main tasks of the LZA are the favouring research in the basic and applied sciences, especially the interdisciplinary research; promoting studies in Latvian history, culture and the development of the Latvian language; active participation in the establishing Latvian science policy and consultation of the Government on scientific issues; care about publishing of scientific literature, organisation of congresses, conferences, discussions, and competitions, popularization of scientific achievements and history of Latvian sciences; maintenance of international contacts of Latvian scientists; protection, maintenance, and perfection of research ethics, discussion principles, and traditions.
As regards organisation of science, the LZA is involved in the designing of Latvian science strategy as well as in the evaluation and monitoring of the Latvian state research programmes and projects. Under the supervision of the MoES the LZA is involved in the management of certain state research programmes related to the research priorities which have been approved by the Government.
